R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva, Rioja 2001

9 in stock

A historic Rioja winery dating back to the late 1800's, it is one of the few from this time to remain a family run Bodega. Their style is very much 'classical' Rioja and based upon lengthy oxidative ageing of wines in barrel, before further ageing in bottle. Some 12,000 barrels are stored underground in the winery complex.

The vineyard of Viña Tondonia – established in 1914 - is comprised of over 100 hectares, situated on the right bank of the river Ebro. The soil is alluvial clay with a high proportion of limestone.

Tempranillo (75%), Garnacha (15%), Mazuelo and Graciano (10%)

The wine is aged in barrel for 10 years, being racked twice a year and fined with fresh egg whites.

In the glass the wine shows as vibrant deep ruby moving to amber at the rim. The nose is delicate and showing signs of age, a dried fruit profile of red berries and stewed plum, vanilla, cigar box and worn leather. The palette is developed, elegant and concentrated with smooth, well integrated tannins which evolve over a long finish.

Ready to drink now or lay down for ageing.

Serve with meat dishes, barbecue.
