Paolo Petrilli Motta di Lupo Puglia 2019

6 in stock

This producer from northern Puglia has employed organic farming methods since beginning to make wines, and is now certified. The first vintage under the estate name was in 2002, prior to which fruit was sold to a local cooperative. 10Ha under vine on the estate.

The Motta di Lupoblend – which falls under the Cacc'e Mmitte di Lucera DOC - is comprised of Nero di Troia, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Bombino Bianco – an unusual combination of both red and white grape varieties. To qualify for this DOC designation the wine must combine red and white grapes.

Grapes are crushed and destemmed, but half the grapes are left whole. Fermented in open top conical vats, aged briefly in stainless steel for six months, and then bottled with a light filtration.

Motta di Lupo presents itself differently to the overly-ripe and extracted Puglian wines so often encountered. There is a core of fresh, red berry and plum fruit on the palette, more acidity to create balance, and lower alcohol. Overall a more thoughtfully put-together wine, and very enjoyable.
