Domaine Le Soula Trigone Rouge, IGP Cotes Catalanes NV
22Ha under vine at this iconic biodynamic Roussillon domaine in the foothills of the Pyrenees. This is a partnership between the great Gérard Gauby and two English wine importers, Roy Richards and Mark Walford, that began in the 1990s. In 2016 the torch at Le Soula was passed to Wendy Paillé who makes the wines and oversees all work in the vineyards.
The patchwork of vineyards is planted with a variety of traditional varieties (Macabeu, Grenache Blanc and Gris, Malvoisie du Roussillon) and imported varieties (Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Vermentino). They have also planted Syrah on the cooler sites. Vines are on average 40 years old, but some were planted as long ago as 1919.
Vineyards were cultivated organically since the outset, and from 2008 onwards have been farmed biodynamically.
Trigone is their blended wine. It is simple and very easy to drink and characterised by being a blend of vintages. This blend is a combination of 2015 (10 %) 2014 (55 %) 2013 (20 %) 2012 (10 %) and 2011 (5 %).
The grape blend of 55 % Syrah 40 % Carignan and 5 % Grenache noir is grown on soils of decomposed granites and gneiss between 350m and 600m above sea level.
In the vineyard only use of sulfer, copper, biodynamic preparations, plants infusions, essential oils, clay and talc. Fruit is hand harvested. Raising of the wine is in a combination of 30 % tank 40 % old 500-liter demi-muids and 30 % wooden vats. No fining at bottling, only a light filtration.
An inviting nose of red fruits and spices, accompanied by more floral notes. The palette - fine and precise - offers incredible freshness, defying the multi-vintage composition of the blend. A unique wine that expresses the terroir of the Pyrenees.

Quick note on Fine Wine purchasing.
When ordering that special bottle of wine it is worth doing a little research before making a purchase. Wine is a living product, which goes through changes and stages of development in the bottle, as well as varying between vintages. If you are considering ordering an older vintage we recommend speaking to a member of staff or using a review site like cellartracker.com to try and get as full a picture as possible of the flavour profile and development of the bottle you are considering.
