Catherine Marshall Wines Fermented in Clay Chenin Blanc, Elgin 2022

3 in stock

Catherine Marshall is one of our favourite winemakers from a South African line-up which has grown in quality over the last year or so. She makes a variety of cuvees, mostly from grapes grown in the cooler climate of Elgin. This coastal region, which is cooled by sea breezes is perfect for producing balanced, fresh wines.

This is a new take on a grape South Africa has made it's own over the last few decades  - Chenin Blanc. The juice was naturally fermented in clay amphorae before 500l was removed to be aged in French oak where some malolactic fermentation was allowed to occur.

This is really stunning wine, one that can be approached in it is youth for delicious stone fruit, citrus, white flower and wet stone flavours. Keep a bottle back for 5, 10 years or even longer and honeyed, nutty, baked pastry and spiced flavours will emerge. In youth and age it captures that special waxy, wollen texture that can only be found with Chenin Blanc. A real gem.
