Roagna La Pira, Barolo DOCG, Piedmont 2014

Established in the 1950s in Barbaresco, the estate now comprises 15Ha of vines spread across some of the best sites in Barolo and Barbaresco zones. It is currently managed by Luca Roagna. Production is organic, uncertified.

They are considered a top producer in the area, with wines characterised by traditional methods, long macerations, and some of the longest pre-release bottle ageing in Piedmont. The Barolos and Barbarescos are considered to be supremely ageworthy for cellaring.

Pira is a historic vineyard located in the village of Castiglione Falletto comprising 4.8Ha with a Southeast facing orientation. Vines are between 25-50 years of age. The family purchased this vineyard in 1989. It is a complex plot with six unique micro parcels depending on the composition of the terrain, which ranges from limestone marl roca to blue stone.

Fermentation with natural yeasts is carried out in wooden tine with maceration for 60 days, followed by five years of ageing in large neutral botti.

The wine has a nose of concentrated black cherry, prune, tar, iron, with hints of cigar-box, violet and liquorice. It has great verve and energy on the palette, and shows a deep complexity as layers evolve. A long and complex finish. A powerful wine with great ageing potential.

Pair with roasted red meat, game, truffle based dishes.
