A 'name' domaine without doubt, perhaps one of the most famous domaines in Burgundy. Established 1919 in its current format, although the Gouge family have made wine for generations. The domaine is currently run by grandsons of Henri, Pierre and Christian Gouges.
Vineyards consist of 36Ha in total, including holdings in six Nuits St. Georges 1er Crus. A modern gravity flow winemaking facility is now used.
Tradition is key here, with Henri's philosophy of "It is on the vines that great wines are made" holding true into the current generation of winemakers. Respecting the land and the environment have been at the heart of their winemaking. Great care to nurture the soil and vines has lead to the highest quality fruit while controlling yields for optimum results.
Harvest is entirely destemmed and vinification takes place in lined cement vats. Once complete, wines are transferred into small oak barrels, with a proportion of roughly 25% new oak each vintage.
These are wines - by design - which are created for the long term. Wines of power and structure, and so and can be difficult in their youth. With volume of production low in each vintage, these are highly sought after bottles. A must-try for Burgundy lovers.
The Nuits St Georges Burgundy cuvee is assembled from seven plots over a total area of roughly 7Ha – Les Plateau, Les Crots, Les Belles Croix, Les Fleuieres, Les Brulees, and Les Chaliots – in deep soils of clay, alluvium, and limestone pebbles.
Nuits St Georges Burgundy 2012 is showing more immediate accessibility than other more premium Gouge bottlings, and whilst could be enjoyed now would still benefit from some laying down.
