The best known wine from Michel Gros - head of the family domaine that now bears his name since 1975. Clos des Réas (the only premier cru monopole in Vosne) is a walled vineyard of around 2Ha and has been owned by the Gros family since 1860. Michel now farms 57.5 acres it total, of which 38 are located in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits.
The Clos des Reas is located on the hillock that overhangs the small Reas valley. The wall of this triangular parcel borders the village of Vosne-Romanee to the east. This soil profile, along with the slope, ensures excellent drainage. The marl lends a silky character to the tannins of the wine, elegance to its perfume, and mild acidity, which make it approachable in its youth.
At harvest, the fruit is hand-sorted in the vineyard and then 100% de-stemmed. Vinification takes place in mainly cement vats, following a gentle crushing of about half of the fruit. The wines are racked once after malolactic fermentation and re-racked again after ageing the barrel. Cuvees are blended in tank where they are fined with egg white and held until bottling.
It's an elegant wine, with silky tannins, racy acidity and a core of ripe black cherry fruit. Velvety on the palette, followed by a focussed finish bursting with spice and energy. The near perfect balance in this wine means it can age for 10 to 15 years while retaining its freshness and fruit expression.
Pair with lamb chops truffles, game, tomato-based sauces.
