In 1973 Jean-Michel Cazes took over the estate and it is currently run by his son, Jean-Charles. Historically the chateau was established in 1749, under the ownership of Irishman, Thomas Lynch. In the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification it was designated a fifth (5ème) growth.
The 90Ha of vines are located on a gravel ridge of well drained soils overlooking the Gironde estuary near the town of Pauillac. Soils are composed of deep gravel over limestone. The proportion of red grapevines grown is roughly 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The Chateau employ massale selection rather than clonal selection, in order to protect the identity of the vineyard.
Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel followed by 15 months in oak (up to 50% new) prior to bottling.
Lynch-Bages has a reputation for being very approachable in it youth, but will benefit greatly with ageing.
Medium bodied with a nose ripe black fruits, pencil shavings. Lots of depth and concentration on the palette with fine grippy tannins and a long finish. The 2008 is a great example fro the Lynch-Bages portfolio.
