Third (3ème) Growth property located within the Cantenac commune of Margaux AOC. Schroder and Schyler have owned the property since the early 1925.
Long underachieving record of winemaking, often deemed unworthy of it's 1855 classification status. This pattern was reversed in the last 10 to 15 years with improvements in quality – key in this was the hiring of Michel Rolland to consult the estate between 1991-2005.
Vineyards are gravel dominant with some sand and limestone. A typical blend is comprised of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. Maturation in oak (30-50% new) for 18-20 months. Carmenere was recently planted on the estate as of 2017 and could in future become a component. In 2016 Chateau Kirwan completed a renovation of their wine making facilities, allowing for parcel by parcel vinification.
The 2000 vintage is well regarded as an example of the renaissance of Kirwan's quality of winemaking.
Its a ripe, concentrated wine, with soft tannins, broad structure and subtle wood influence. Polished.
