100% Mencia from the Atlantic influenced DO of Ribeira Sacra by Fedellos do Couto, a winery established in 2013. It's a region gaining a lot of attention for it's interesting wines currently. Ribeira Sacra sits up in the Gallician North West area of the country and is characterised by steep terraced vineyards and a proximity to the Atlantic Ocean which brings more rain and humidity than the majority of Spain.
The grapes for this wine come from a single vineyard above the Sil river, located on those step terraces of up to 500m which necessitate farming by hand. Vines are untrained, a perfect reflection of the organic low intervention approach that the winemakers take in their work.
There is a pure and elegant quality to this Mencia. It reveals characteristic white pepper and bright red fruit on the nose. On the palette there follows cherry and plum with hints of crushed herbs and tobacco. The wine is framed by a fresh acidity which makes it very drinkable. Try serving this wine slightly chilled.
Pair with grilled lamb chops, Mediterranean tapas and small plates, Moussaka.
This wine is suitable for vegetarian and vegan wine drinkers.
