Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Daniel Bocquenet's attention is focused on three flagship bottlings – Echezeaux, Vosne-Romanee “La Croix Blanche”, and this wine the Nuits-Saint-Georges “Aux Saint-Julien”. All other Nuits-Saint-Georges fruit for Village level wines is sold off for private bottlings.
For the big three, this means ultra-low yields, and long fermentations in 100% new oak producing fascinating, rich and expressive wines of consistent quality. He ferments fruit in separate plots, raising them up in preparation for blending into one large tank. Bottling is without any filtration.
This is a very small, 4 hectare domaine that was begun by Daniel's father Marcel Bocquenet. It's lies at the northern edge of Nuits St Georges. These are niche wines and highly sought after.
The 2005 vintage produced uniformly good wines. Good weather over the summer and cool nights were followed by timely rains in August. Fruit was free of infections, and grapes characterised by possessing thick skins – perfect for wines with intensity of colour and structure.
A wine which will make for fascinating drinking into the future.
