Domaine Dugat-Py Bourgogne Rouge 2012

Bernard Dugat makes impressive wines characterised by a focus upon use of new oak from 10Ha of quality vineyards. The family - now into their 13th generation of winemaking - are based in Gevrey-Chambertin. Wines are aged here in cellars which were built in the 11th and 12th century, underneath the remains of the Aumônerie -a kind of small abbey - which is from the 9th Century and belonged to the St Benigne Abbey in Dijon. Original vineyard plots local to Gevrey-Chambertin have been supplemented over the years with acquisitions into Côte de Beaunec – Pommard, Meursault etc..

The Dugat family decided to split in the early 1990’s, leading to the creation of 2 individual estates, Domaine Dugat (Bernard's cousin, Claude) and Domaine Dugat-Py (the Py coming from Bernard’s wife's maiden name).

The domaine has been certified organic since 2003, with some biodynamic treatments undertaken. A horse is used to plough where possible.

Vines for this Bourgogne level wine have an average age of 35 years. They grow in soils of clay-limestone geology. Organic treatment throughout, with an overall low interventional approach. Fermentation in cement and wooden vats, with no strict temperature control. Aging 12 to 18 months in oak barrels, 10% of which are new. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered.

This is a soft and very pure wine with lovely expression of terroir. Perfumed with fresh red berry fruit, cherry and strawberry with good minerality. Very structured. Indeed Dugat-Py entry level Bourgogne bottlings possess structure and length more akin to 1er Cru bottlings from other estates, so to enjoy Dugat-Py at it's best, some patience is recommended.
