Bruno Giacosa, Barbaresco, Asili, Italy 2017, 6x75cl, IB

1 in stock

The nose is nicely perfumed with sweet ripe red cherry and blood orange fruit, red roses, violets, and exotic spice. On the palate, the wine was a rich and full bodied expression of Nebbiolo, with sweet red cherries, spice, and violets, showing a fabulous inner sweetness. Refreshing acidity maintained freshness despite the ripeness, and the one knock was the tannins which are slightly grainy and quite potent, but not bad in the context of the vintage (I found a few 2017 Barolo or Nebbiolo samples to be harsh and drying).

This is clearly a wine from a warm vintage, but the acidity level maintains freshness and the sweetness of the fruit alongside the spice and floral aromatics is very charming. The only knock is the tannins, but I expect these will do their thing over time and round off as the wine matures. Bruno Giacosa is not making wines to drink immediately thats for sure!
