Winemaker Juan Gonzalez Arjones states that the goal of this project was to bring back the traditional red wines of Rías Baixas, in an area dominated by the white grape Alabriño. As Furnias is a blend of local Galician red grapes Brancellao, Caiño Longo, Caiño da Terra, Sousón y Espadeiro.


Whilst the wine is labelled as a table wine (vino de mesa) the vineyards are located in Crecente - a sub-region of Rías Baixas - lying close to the River Minho, which separates Spain from northern Portugal.


His approach to winemaking is low intervention throughout with fruit farmed without chemicals and fermented with native yeasts from the vineyard. Juan is committed to minimal use of SO2, only emplying at the bottling stage.


Fermentation is always carried out with the vineyard’s own yeasts, in stainless steel. Two to three times a day battonage is carried out. After the wine is racked out of the tank, settled and then hand pressed. Then the wine is racked back into steel tanks without sulphur for two years, naturally starting malolactic fermentation.


This is a fresh and juicy wine, has a certain wildness to it and is framed by a lively acidity. There's a nice balance between crunchy raspberry and redcurrant fruit and savoury, earthy notes. Tannins are gentle, soft.


Try serving this wine lightly chilled.
