Viña Zorzal Graciano is a red wine from D.O Navarra produced by Bodegas Zorzal in the village of Corella. It was founded in 1989 with the aim of rescuing the forgotten indigenous varieties of the area.

Graciano was once much more widely planted in Spain, and is undergoing a renaissance of sorts as a new appreciation takes hold. The Graciano varietal adapts very well to a hot climate such a Navarra. Wines with a good amount of freshness can be achieved as the fruit can maintain good acidity levels even in a warmer environment.

Zorzal practice low intervention, environmentally-friendly viticulture, all processes are carried out manually. In the vineyard selected native plants are encouraged to grow around the vines for ground cover and fertilization in carried out only with compost to improve the vine’s resistance to diseases. This minimal intervention approach continues into the vinification stage where spontaneous fermentations, no racking, fining and filtration are carried out. No additives are used and sulphur is used only in very moderate doses.

Vines average at over 30 years old in the vineyard. The grapes are harvested by hand and then undergo a light pre-fermentation maceration at 8ºC to extract the aromatic potential. Alcoholic fermentation – with native yeasts - takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 22-24ºC, with a maceration with the skins for 8 days. 25% of the fruit undergoes malolactic fermentation in new fine-grained French barrels – the remainder in stainless steel vats. The wine is the aged for 9 months with its lees in French oak barrels.

In the glass there are fresh aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, with black pepper, cedar and earth. The palette is dry and fresh, with soft tannins and a medium body. Black fruit notes and a mineral edge linger on a long finish. Recommended.
